Best Art Galleries in Charleston

With over 300 years of history, it’s no wonder that the Holy City has cultivated the fine arts during that time. Today, there are plenty of art galleries in the city, filled with works from talented artists dedicated to honing their craft.

We’ve put together this list of three of the most notable Charleston art galleries that you should visit during your stay.

Robert Lange Studios

  • Address: 2 Queen St, Charleston, SC
  • Hours: Daily from 11 AM to 5 PM

Located in a vintage brick building built in 1670, Robert Lange Studios allows visitors to connect with contemporary works in a 6,000 square foot, modern-industrial setting. The showcased artwork is created by artists both locally and internationally, covering a wide range of disciplines, including sculpture, photography, and painting. There is an interactive area as well, featuring a piano, swing, and arrangeable rocks.

Another quality that helps this fine art gallery in Charleston stand out is that they regularly invite artists across the country and the world to stay on site for a residency. This means that you may even get to see an artist in the middle of their craft, producing breathtaking works of art in their own gallery space.

LePrince Fine Art Gallery

  • Address: 183 & 184 King Street, Charleston, SC
  • Hours: Mon - Sat 10 AM - 6 PM, Sun 11 AM - 5 PM

One of the highest-rated fine art galleries in Charleston, LePrince Fine Art Gallery can be found nestled in the midst of the prestigious King Street. The art gallery was founded in 2011 by local painter Kevin LePrince, gaining much fame and recognition over the years.

This gallery mainly focuses their display on a variety of oil paintings: modern, contemporary, and impressionist. Visitors can admire the sculptures there as well. It isn’t an uncommon sight to see a local painter creating on site.

A large part of LePrince’s reputation comes from their friendly staff. Knowledge and friendly, they regularly offer consultations on framing, collecting and installation. They even can offer free virtual previews of art around your home, as they are not only intent on helping you find art that speaks to you, but also how to best display said art.

Ben Ham Gallery

  • Address: 416 King St, Charleston, SC
  • Hours: Tues - Fri 12 - 5 PM, Sat 11 AM - 5 PM, Sun 11 AM - 3 PM, Closed Mon

Lovers of nature photography would do well to visit the Ben Ham Gallery during their stay in Charleston.

Heavily inspired by the late Ansel Adams,  Ben Adams is a self-taught photographer who exclusively works through traditional means. This is to say that he only works with black and white film, using only a large format wooden camera. His highly meticulous method for taking photographs is shown through his work. Each nature photo has an immense amount of detail in the composition and can convey several moods at once.

For those interested in collecting photographs, each picture sold is intentionally produced to last, using acid free materials and the best methods for framing and protection.

You can view Ben’s work and learn more about the gallery on their website.
